Steiner Education & the International Baccalaureate®

About Steiner/Waldorf Education

Steiner/Waldorf education is a unique and distinctive approach to educating children that has been practised in Steiner schools worldwide for over 100 years.

Steiner/Waldorf schools emphasise balanced and holistic development, creating learning environments that are oriented towards moral growth, social consciousness and citizenship. Schools are grounded in working artistically, practically and intellectually. As well as being integrated, the curriculum is broad, interdisciplinary and culturally rich.

The aim of Steiner education is to enable and support the healthy development of the whole individual, positioning graduates to think freely, meet complexity and impart purpose and direction to their lives.

Steiner teaching methods and curriculum, tailored for different developmental stages, ensure a meaningful and respectful learning journey.

  • Prep is a time for creative play, an exploration of the physical world and an introduction to the rhythms of the school day.
  • Primary is a time for imagination, learning through artistic creation and practical achievements.
  • Secondary is a time for increasing independence and responsibility, and the ability to think in ways that are both critical and creative.

Especially in the early years, we place equal value on physical (kinetic) and emotional learning alongside intellectual learning. These diverse aspects of education come together to form a holistic approach, aligning with current research into effective learning.

For parents seeking a comprehensive, holistic education for their children that focuses on in-depth, meaningful learning and academic excellence, Steiner schools offer a well-established path to a fulfilling life.

Sophia Mundi has adapted a core Steiner curriculum to its own cultural and environmental situation to meet the needs of its students and remain true to the values and philosophy of Rudolf Steiner.

In a fast-changing world, Steiner education fosters the breadth of skills, knowledge and attributes supporting children to flourish into the future.

About the International Baccalaureate® Diploma Programme

Sophia Mundi is committed to fostering a learning community with an international standard of excellence, that puts the learner at the centre. For our students in Year 11 and 12 we offer the prestigious International Baccalaureate® Diploma Programme. This globally recognised programme complements our holistic educational approach, providing a challenging and balanced academic curriculum.

Sophia Mundi’s mission is to educate and enable individuals to become socially responsible contributors to the ongoing well-being of the community and the world. The IB Programme aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world. We see the two as aligned and complementary, with the IB programme integrating beautifully with Steiner’s considered curriculum approach. The Diploma Programme continues to work in a threefold manner (thinking, feeling and willing) that we value so highly in Steiner education.

The IB emphasises critical thinking, global awareness, and independent research, equipping students with the skills and knowledge essential for success in higher education and beyond.

By integrating the IB programme into our Steiner curriculum, we ensure that our students are not only academically prepared but also develop a broad worldview and a deep understanding of their responsibilities as global citizens.
