Languages
French as a second language is taught throughout the school. Our French program begins in Prep where students learn simple words through songs and games. In the Primary School, French lessons emphasise speaking, listening and learning about French culture, moving toward more academic studies as the students progress.
French in the Primary School is taught through the Canadian method created by teacher Wendy Maxwell called AIM (Accelerated Integrative Method).
This is a popular approach in use around the world, especially in Primary Schools. All classes from Prep to 6 at Sophia Mundi have weekly French lessons.
Why is AIM so effective?
The AIM approach is based on teaching a gesture for every word and grammar concept. The teacher gestures while speaking and students speak (and sometimes gesture as well) simultaneously, or a second after the teacher, which we call choral speaking.
This practice supports more accessible comprehension and maximises the opportunity for language practice and development. Gesture-based learning ensures that students are more likely to remember the information as it involves using the body.
Pared-down language
AIM teachers focus on high-frequency words. This focus and frequent repetition of key vocabulary help students master it faster and develop greater proficiency and confidence in the language.
Exchange program
The highlight of our French Language program is the exchange program in year 10. Students with an interest and aptitude for French can apply to go on exchange to one of our sister schools in France or Switzerland. The exchange is great preparation for undertaking French in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.
We also offer Spanish as an second language option in Year 10 – 12.
