The Arts

At Sophia Mundi we epitomise the concept of 'academic integrity through artistic endeavour'. Artistic expression is seamlessly woven into our curriculum, allowing students to not only develop academically but also hone their creative and practical abilities. This emphasis on creativity builds creative individuals with the capacity for self-expression and flexible thinking.

Nestled inside the biggest Arts Precinct in Australia, we are fortunate to be able to work with the amazing artists and creators in this space. We regularly participate in the 'Slow Art Collective' sculptural installations, with students creating artworks with Artists in residence. We also collaborate with the pottery studio Cone 11, our generous and talented neighbour.

Primary

In the Primary school, art activities are closely linked with the content of the Main Lessons and serve to strengthen the students' understanding of their work. Artistic expression ranges from watercolour paintings, wax modelling and other sculptural explorations of their Main Lesson concepts all the way through to singing, dancing and class plays.

Secondary

In the Secondary school, classes continue to embed artistic practices into their Main Lessons and other classes. Students also begin to attend specialist art classes, specifically focusing on Visual Arts, Drama and Music. Our talented art teachers include a range of professional exhibiting artists and performers.

Our Visual Arts curriculum changes based on the needs and interests of our students, and includes a range of media explorations such as drawing, painting, printmaking, lens and digital based work, photography, the Adobe Suite, sculpture, mixed media and ceramics.

You can see some of our student’s artwork exhibited on isArtworks - an interactive, online gallery presentation by Independent Schools Victoria.

Drama

Drama is also an integral part of the arts curriculum. From puppet plays in Prep to solo performances in Secondary school, Sophia Mundi provides a sequenced experience, hosting a play production involving the whole class in most years.  Plays are chosen to build on and complement the studies in the classroom, advancing students’ love and respect for language and performance and developing appreciation for the capacities and strengths of each class member.

In the Secondary School, we continue to enhance students' learning through regular class plays and school performances, again usually linked to their Main Lessons.
